Questions About Teeth Crowns

Answers from Austin Dentist, Dr. Dan Matthews

Here are some of the most common questions that patients have about teeth crowns.

What Is A Tooth Crown?

Sometimes referred to as a cap, a tooth crown is tooth-shaped covering, usually made out of porcelain that is placed over a tooth in order to restore it, provide protection, as well as to improve the overall appearance of the tooth. A tooth crown fully encases the entire tooth from the gum line and up.

What Are Teeth Crowns Used For?

Teeth crowns are used for all sorts of purposes. The most common reasons include:

  • To protect a decaying or weakened tooth
  • To hold together a severely cracked or chipped tooth
  • To keep a dental bridge in place
  • To restore a misshapen, broken, or discolored tooth

Can Teeth Crowns Perfect My Smile?

Unless you come in for a consultation with Dr. Matthews, there is no saying whether or not teeth crowns will be able to completely perfect your smile. With teeth crowns, discoloration, cracks, and chips can all be masked. Remember that a perfect smile is also one that is healthy. Because of the restorative and practical purposes of tooth crowns, they are very reliable for ensuring a healthy and well-protected smile.

Will I Need A Root Canal?

If your tooth is severely decayed and the root has become infected, then you will probably need a root canal, but the only way to be sure is to come in for an appointment. Don’t worry. Root canal therapy has come a long way, and the pain from a root canal is negligible compared to root canals of yesteryear. Dr. Matthews will keep you comfortable, and we also have sedation dentistry available.
