“I’ve had quite a year for teeth,” said acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton in a recent interview with The New York Times’ Carpetbagger blog, which notes that she wore false teeth in each of her four major film roles this year.
While Swinton used false teeth to enhance the physical aspects of her performances, dentures and similar dental appliances also have more practical purposes. The Denture Fountain of Youth™ and dental implants, for example, can serve as replacements for lost teeth while also restoring bite function and aspects of your oral health.
Sinking Her Teeth In
Swinton’s most notably toothy role of 2014 came in Bong Joon-ho’s well-received sci-fi/action film Snowpiercer, in which she plays the officious and dentally handicapped Minister Mason, whose cartoonish chompers give the character a distinctive look and speech pattern.
Swinton also donned false teeth for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel and Terry Gilliam’s The Zero Theorem. She went for a sharper look as a vampire in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive.
Fangs for the Memories
Each set of teeth for Swinton’s characters was designed by Chris Lyons, a dental technician at Fangs F/X.
Fangs F/X is a leader in custom teeth and facial effects. The company has produced false teeth and other effects for movies including Captain America, Alice in Wonderland, Shaun of the Dead, The Reader, and the Harry Potter films.
Swinton praised Fangs F/X’s dental work, calling Lyons an “amazing guy” who custom-crafted four wildly different sets of false teeth for the actress in a single year (while also balancing TV work, theater performances, and upcoming major releases like Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, which is based on the true story that inspired Moby-Dick, and the Johnny Depp action-comedy Mortdecai).
