Good Oral Hygiene Makes Cosmetic Dentistry Better

In Britain, the National Health Service Information Centre found that more than a quarter of all adults claim that their choice of dental treatment is influenced by cost. Additionally, 19 percent claim that they have delayed treatment due to cost factors.  If cost is a concern for you, good dental hygiene can make your investment last much longer.

To drive home the point, Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, claims that cosmetic dentistry is “not a sensible investment if your oral hygiene on a daily basis is not up to scratch.”

“If you are not cleaning your teeth properly you will be more likely to suffer from gum disease,” Dr. Carter continued. “The appearance of crowns and veneers which are provided will also be improved if your gums are in good condition.”

Dr. Dan Matthews can help you whether you want to whiten your teeth or get a complete smile makeover. We can fix cracked teeth and replace missing teeth, or give you a crown or filling that nobody will be able to see. No matter what kind of imperfection you want to correct, there is a cosmetic procedure that can help.

Our friendly and experienced team can work with you to develop a dental regime that will serve you long after you leave our office. One of the biggest mistakes most people make is that they believe that the way they were taught to clean their teeth as children still applies. However advances in dental care have given us much better techniques to keep our teeth clean and our gums healthy.

The main thing you want to do is remove plaque. The key is to remember that plaque is a soft substance, so you don’t need to brush hard to remove it. In fact, studies have shown that brushing hard with a medium or firm bristle does more harm than good. Use a soft brush and work the bristles in a circular motion, just like the tooth polisher that your hygienist uses. This prevents abrasion to the gums, which can lead to receding gums. Don’t forget to floss — we recommend flossing at night just before you brush. In flossing, you don’t need to use the fancy handles, your fingers are actually still the best way.

When you come to see Dr. Matthews, we will not only fix your smile, we will teach you how to maintain it for the rest of your life. That way your investment will pay dividends in terms of your confidence, happiness, and even career. We want to make sure that you feel secure sharing your smile, and don’t hide it.
